This year, more than 60% of the total sown area of grain, which is 30.86 million hectares, was sown with climate-resistant wheat varieties in India. This was stated by the Commissioner for Agriculture of India PK Singh, Business-standard reports .
According to the official, after the wheat harvest in India was significantly reduced last year due to severe heat, in 2023 the country’s government is actively promoting the use of climate-resistant varieties of grain, aiming to cover 60% of the total sown area with them.
“We exceeded the planned indicator, as more than 60% of the sown areas are currently sown with drought-resistant varieties. Last year, only 45% of the area was sown with these varieties,” he said.
It will be recalled that wheat is the main winter crop in India, the sowing of which usually begins in November, and harvesting – in March-April.
